Paying homage to the hypnotic groove….
After a brief hiatus, we’re back. The “Feel Factory” EP is by new breed Chicago producers Max Jacobson and David Powers. Max has been DJing around town at some of our favorite spots and organizes undergrounds and private afterhours. David, a professional musician and music instructor also DJs, throws parties and performs live with his jazz trio. Max and David’s songs are out on Akbal Music, Klectik and Fade, and they have forthcoming releases on Tanzbar Musik / Workbench and Snubb Records. “Feel Factory’s” title track is slow-burning and earthy with great changes. “Don’t Let It” combines Powers’ jazz licks with an elegant classic U.S. house groove. The last two tracks get more psychedelic. For their first remix in years, Nathan and Mazi work the machines over “Don’t Let It,” adding tape echoes, MPC programming, a string machine and other vintage synths. The EP ends with “Dos”, a tracky cut with a low vibe and warehouse rhythms. We think this is future house that knows its history.
This is my remix of Maiki’s “Orange Sky” on Stranjjur Imprint. I slowed down the parts from the original, played a new bass line, electric piano, pads, drums and strings, chopped in some Donny Hathaway vocals, and let it all ride on a more or less bareback raw arrangement. It feels good when played out on a sound system. It’s available on vinyl and digital through the online shops.
fatos
fatos is sleeping
on my leg
she’s less than 4 inches long
and smells like a mini sewer
a kitten
abandoned by her mother
or lost
found by a friend
off the sidewalk
about to enter a road
full of oncoming traffic
her paws are white and speckled
smeared with dirt and black dots
she has monkey eyes
the hair on her
seems borrowed
she is out cold on my leg
her neck is dangling
her arms wrapped around her eyes
hanging on
maybe she is dreaming.
I don’t know
my leg’s asleep
a pincushion
I want to move it
but don’t want
to disturb this orphan
fatos could die tonight
or tomorrow
but this time spent looking at her
with
her monkey eyes
and the ragged curl of her mouth
the sight of her paper thin teeth
reminds me,
sets in motion again
the blood in my veins

Below you’ll find the track list for the set along with a few notes about the process of recording it.
I mixed these thirteen songs together in my living room. That’s where the turntables, mixer, Yamaha amp and Technics ghetto blaster speakers are set up. I started with one of my favorite MK dub’s - the one for Bizarre Inc’s “Love In Motion”. The loosely glued together rough arrangement of MK’s Dub, peppered with outtakes from vocalist Yvonne Yanney, always surprises me with it’s contours even though I’ve heard it dozens of times. The first blend was into the Two Armadillos Remix of Jovonn’s “A Definition Of A Track”. I couldn’t envision a better way to get the blood flowing. Smith and Dawson have struck such an intense and emotional groove with Two Armadillos that I am nearly a dogmatic follower of their music at this point. From track 3 to 13 my cerebral cortex, more or less, switched off. Things just naturally happened. New tracks played nice with older ones; songs about luv called to the dance floor, exhalations echoed and bit by bit came chirps, twangs, bumps, breezes, strings, pianos, bass, drums and studio magic. The atmosphere got colder outside and I sweat in the living room, headphones on, dancing as beats melted together.
